Home Charging: Plug In While You Sleep

Charging at home is the most convenient way to keep your electric car topped up. If you have off-street parking, you can install a dedicated home charger and wake up every morning to a full battery.

Here’s what to know:

  • You’ll need a wall-mounted home charging point (usually 7.4 kW)

  • Charging overnight takes between 7 to 10 hours, depending on your vehicle

  • You may qualify for SEAI home charger grants to reduce installation costs

We’ll guide you through the process of choosing the right unit and finding a trusted installer.

How Fast Can I Charge?

Charging speed depends on two things: the charger’s power and your car’s onboard charging capacity. Even if you plug into a fast charger, your EV will only draw power at the maximum rate it can accept.

Here’s a general guide to charging times:

Charger Output 50 kWh Battery 75 kWh Battery
7.4 kW (Home) ~7h 45m ~10h
11 kW (Work/3-phase) ~5h 15m ~6h 45m
50 kW (Fast public) ~53 min ~1h 20m
150 kW (Rapid) ~18 min ~27 min

⚠️ Charging speed slows down after 80% to protect battery health — especially on rapid chargers.

Rapid Charging: Power in Minutes

When you’re in a hurry, rapid and ultra-rapid public chargers can get you back on the road quickly — often charging your EV to 80% in 15–40 minutes.

Rapid chargers are commonly:

  • Found at motorway service stations

  • Rated between 50 kW and 150+ kW

  • Compatible with most modern EVs (check your model’s DC charge limit)

Pricing varies: from €0.25 to €0.80 per kWh depending on the provider, location, and charging speed. Some networks charge per session or minute — always check the app for local pricing.
